Objective
Systematically investigate a Linux system to gather evidence of compromise, identify persistence mechanisms, and reconstruct attacker activity during a forensic investigation.
Prerequisites
- Access to the target Linux system (live or image)
- Root or sudo privileges for full access
- Note which commands are live-analysis only — avoid on forensic images
Phase 1 — System & OS Information
Establish baseline information about the system before investigating further.
Common Commands

Phase 2 — System Configuration
Review network configuration, running processes, and DNS settings.

Phase 3 — Persistence Mechanisms
Identify how an attacker may have established persistence on the system.

Phase 4 — Evidence of Execution
Reconstruct what commands and programs were executed on the system.

Phase 5 — Log Files
Review system, authentication, and application logs for suspicious activity.
